How to Use This Playbook

The playbook is organized around the core capabilities required to operate an Agile delivery organization.

Start with the Executive Summary for context, then use the sections below based on your role.

For Executives

Start here:

These artifacts provide visibility into:

  • transformation progress
  • systemic constraints
  • delivery predictability
  • cultural health

For Delivery Leaders

Focus on the delivery system and value stream.

Key artifacts:

These define how work flows from idea to delivered customer value.

For Coaches and Transformation Leads

Use the coaching and maturity model artifacts to guide organizational capability development.

Core resources:

These help identify systemic constraints and guide targeted improvement interventions.

For Teams

Teams can use the templates to establish healthy working practices.

Templates:

These templates support continuous improvement at the team level.

Core Components of the Operating Model

The playbook is built around five interconnected elements.

1. Transformation Governance

Governance defines decision rights, escalation paths, and accountability across the organization.

Artifacts:

These define how decisions are made and how systemic issues escalate.

2. Delivery System

The delivery system describes how work flows from idea intake to customer delivery.

Artifacts:

These artifacts help measure and improve delivery performance.

3. Product and Value Orientation

Agile transformation must shift organizations from output-based delivery to outcome-based delivery.

Artifacts:

These define strategic alignment and transformation direction.

4. Capability Development

Organizations must continuously improve their ability to deliver value.

Artifacts:

These guide capability development and improvement planning.

5. Culture and Leadership

Cultural and leadership alignment is often the primary constraint in transformation efforts.

Artifact:

This document identifies common organizational resistance patterns and strategies for addressing them.

System Diagrams (Recommended Reading Order)

These diagrams explain how the Agile operating model fits together.

If you are new to the playbook, review them in the following order.

1. Value Stream Flow

Shows the end-to-end flow from idea intake through delivery and feedback.

See:

Value Stream Flow

2. Framework Value Stream Comparison

Shows how common scaling frameworks map onto the same underlying value stream.

See:

Framework Value Stream Comparison

3. Unified Value Stream Overlay

Shows how SAFe, LeSS, Nexus, Scrum@Scale, and Disciplined Agile relate to the value stream.

See:

Unified Value Stream Overlay

4. Coaching Escalation Flow

Shows how systemic issues escalate across teams, coaches, and leadership.
